How To Delete a User Profile in Windows (delprof.exe)
This step-by-step article describes how to delete a user profile from a local computer. If you use this method, you delete the
%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\Username folder that contains the user's My Documents folder, desktop settings, Start menu,
favorites, and cookies. This method also deletes the profile from the ProfileList key in the registry.
This procedure does not remove a user's ability to log back on to the same computer. Doing so creates a new
%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\Username folder. This does not re-create the user's previous documents, desktop settings,
Start menu, favorites, and cookies.
Delprof is not available in the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit. It is a command-line and gui utility that you can use to delete
user profiles on a local or remote computers running Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. User profiles can grow
large and may take up considerable disk space, especially if there are several users using one computer. Because of this, you may
want to use Delprof.exe to free disk space by deleting profiles that are no longer required. However, because each profile on the
computer is presented in order when you run the utility, you may want to use the graphical interface instead of the command-line
tool whenever possible.
Note: You must be logged on as administrator or as a member of the Administrators group to delete user profiles.
Delprof (delprof.exe) deletes all data that is stored in a user profile. This includes desktop settings, favorites, program-specific
data that is contained in the Application Data folder, and the contents of the My Documents folder. Please be aware of any user
documents that may be deleted before you use this tool.
Is there a tool I can use to delete user profiles?
Microsoft provides the user profile deletion tool, which you can download at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=901A9B95-6063-4462-8150-360394E98E1E&displaylang=en . The tool lets you use
a command line to delete user profiles. It has a number of switches that, for example, can remove all profiles that are inactive
for a configurable amount of time and can operate on both local and remote computers.
By default, the tool simply runs through all profiles, and when used with the /p switch, will prompt whether the user profile should
be deleted or not. Used with the /d switch to specify a number of days of inactivity, the utility becomes more useful, as this sample
execution shows:
How to delete user profiles properly ?
Whenever a user logs onto a Windows computer, a user profile folder is created for that user under C:\Documents and Settings. If you want
to delete any of these user profiles, don’t simply delete the C:\Documents and Settings\user_name folder for that user as it leaves
the registry settings for that profile intact and this can confuse the profile service and cause unpredictable results. The right way
of deleting a user profile is to use the profile applet, which is accessible from the Advanced tab of the System applet in Control Panel.
How To Delete User Profiles by Using the User Profile Deletion Utility (Delprof.exe) in Windows 2000
This step-by-step article describes how to delete user profiles on Windows 2000-based computers by using the User Profile Deletion Utility (Delprof.exe).
Delprof.exe is available in the Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit. It is a command-line utility that you can use to delete user profiles on a
local or remote Windows 2000-based computer. User profiles can grow large and may take up considerable disk space, especially if there are several
users using one computer. Because of this, you may want to use Delprof.exe to free disk space by deleting profiles that are no longer required.
However, because each profile on the computer is presented in order when you run the utility, you may want to use the Graphical User Interface (GUI)
instead of the command-line tool whenever this is possible.
You must be logged on as administrator or as a member of the Administrators group to delete user profiles with delprof.exe.
Remote Profile Cleaner is awesome it has filled in the needs left wanting by Microsofts DELPROF.exe.
Also, I've found a utility that you can use to delete user profiles remotely from your computer as long as you've got knowledge of an account
and password that is an administrator on your remote PCs. Great for cleaning up profile problems without having to visit the remote site.
There is a utility I use called "Remote profile cleaner", you can download a free trial version.
I use to go through people user profiles and cleans them up.
That remote profile cleaner is great! I'm going to leave it running overnight, while my machine does a new ghost build. It seems on the
surface to be EXACTLY what we need.
Remote Profile Cleaner works fine for me. I work with a big company. it has about 7500 employees. In my team itself we have 890 employees.
they will be using 300 machines round the clock. so, the profiles will be huge.
You can find the Remote Profile Cleaner utility at http://www.no-nonsens.nl/ - Version 3.0 is the newest version I think. Great program!
You can delete windows user profiles off remote computers, and customize which are deleted by lots of different parameters.
